Boublil and Schonberg modeled their idea for the musical version of Les Mis after the musical Oliver!

Les Miserables was published in 1862 in French - the English version was released the same year.
At 1500 pages in the English version, it is one of the longest novels ever published.

Victor Hugo also wrote The Hunchback of Notre Dame - will Disney be releasing the animated version of Les Mis soon?

Les Misérables has been translated into 22 different languages.

The professional production has played in 42 countries and over 319 cities.

The acronym ABC in Friends of the ABC is not explained, however, the pronunciation of ABC in French sounds like the word for lower.  So the students are the Friends of the Low.

Gavroche is actually the abandoned son of the Thenardiers. 

Hugo based ValJean on an acquaintance named Eugene Vidocq who had many of the actual experiences related in the story, including being a convict at Toulon and then going on to found a factory to employ the poor and become mayor of a small town. He lifted a cart to save a worker’s life and also adopted an orphaned girl.

Hugo himself saved a prostitute from being arrested after she attacked a man who had taunted her and put snow down her back.

The prison at Toulon was also used in the Count of Monte Cristo.

The June Rebellion depicted in the story lasted one day and one night, June 5 & 6, 1832.
Les Misérables was nominated for thirteen 1987 Tony Awards, won eight Tony Awards (Best Musical, Best Featured Actor (Michael Maguire), Best Featured Actress (Frances Ruffelle), Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Score and Best Book.

The Bishop in the 2012 film of Les Mis was the original Jean ValJean character on Broadway.

While robbing the bodies of dead soldiers at Waterloo, in 1815, Thenardier comes across the wounded father of Marius and inadvertently saves his life (after robbing him).

Geoffry Rush won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Javert in the non-musical film version.

The medal that Javert affixes to Gavroche is the Legion of Honour, the highest decoration in France.

Anne Hathaway's mother, Kate McCauley Hathaway played Fantine in the first US tour of the musical.

The London production of Les Miserables, which opened in 1985 is the world’s longest running musical.
 
The Thenardiers actually have 5 children in the novel.  Mme Thenardier only raises the two daughters, Eponine and Azelma.

Jackie Marks, who plays The Factory Woman in the film originated the role of Factory Girl in the original London production.  She has also played Fantine and Mme Thenardier on stage.

Victor Hugo was celebrated in his 80th year with a 6-hour parade past his home in Paris.  The name of his street was officially changed to Avenue Victor Hugo, and his mail was from then on addressed, "Mister Victor Hugo, in his Avenue, Paris."  2 million people marched in his funeral procession 3 years later.

The current touring production of Les Mis involves over 300 costumes and requires 101 cast & crew members.

The Les Misérables Schools’ Edition was launched in the US in 2001 and has been performed at more than 3,000 schools, including El Dorado High, in 2008.
