Vocal Health and Warm-ups

Hi all you People Singers...
I can't wait for audiences to see what you have achieved! Your commitment has been super. Now it is time to stay healthy so your work can be shared. First, for vocal health, stay hydrated...this windy, cold weather is drying. Warm herbal teas are the best.....coffee is dehydrating, as much as I love it.  Like Holly did last night, wear a scarf or sweater to keep your neck warm. (No screaming at your friends, your parents, or your kids.)
We do not have time for adequate vocal warm ups before performances. Sing warm ups as you get ready to come to the theater....in the shower, in the car...You can do the exercises we did in vocal rehearsals...and/or there are some great free apps for Android or Apple devices online. They work great.......
Please let me know if you want more info.
Stay healthy, have a joyous time, and.....keep singing! Blessings, Les Mis family. I am so proud of you!

An Issue

If you have a child in the ensemble who is 11 or younger,
we need you to provide an adult kid wrangler for the performances.
Even if you are in the show.
It is impossible for actors in the cast or crew to monitor the behavior of their children during a performance.

Please see the sign up sheet that Dan Snow and Kim Havercroft emailed to the entire cast.  It would be good if we had two adult kid managers who would be on site starting at call time for each show date.

Your child will need to bring a quiet activity and a healthy snack and stay occupied while not on stage.

Please remind your child that it is not safe to leave the theater without an adult and that they cannot play outside in their costumes. There is a safety issue with children wandering around backstage "looking" for someone, or just hanging around.  THIS IS DANGEROUS.

Additionally, children in the cast must wear the costumes that they were assigned by Terri, and not some other items that they prefer.  In the Beggars scene, they are supposed to be destitute orphans living on the street, not children attending a party in Dickens' Christmas Carol.  Please help your child understand that they are part of an ensemble and they have an important role in helping to complete the overall picture.

If we continue to have trouble with their noise level and their whereabouts, we can switch to an alternating performance schedule where we have only two or three of them in each show.
Help your child leave the cast and crew with a good impression!

Performance Nights

Everyone please note-
Due to our limited lobby space and large cast for this production, we ask that for performance nights- that is, when there is an audience-

Cast, orchestra and crew members please enter the theater through a rear door.
There is a door near the restrooms that will be open, and there are doors behind the stage that will be open.

Thank you!

We're getting down to the end...Thank you all for creating an exciting, moving production that will amaze our audiences!

Love,
EBM

Not contagious - from Adeline

Hello All,
I left early last night as I was feeling pukey and weird. Woke up this morning and I am fine. I think I ate something funky, so no worries about spreading anything.

Program Bios

Hey Everybody,

ITEM 1

Nancy Christeson has graciously agreed to format the program for our show!

She proposed having our cast bios online for audience viewing via iphone prior to curtain.
If you would like to have a bio on the IT blog for audience viewing, please type it up and email it to Nancy at   itplacerville@yahoo.com

You can also send a photo if you like.  Narrative style is the easiest to read, but since we'll have as much space as we like, unleash the creative beast within yourself!

We do ask that you get to it asap, to make Nancy's job easier.

-----

ITEM 2

Please take some time this week to advertise the show!
Get a notice into any newsletters, on bulletin boards, in lunch rooms, at the library, post office, coffee shop, hair/nail salons, gyms, etc.   Plus, tell people that you are in the show and that you want them to come see it.  It does make a difference.  There are more posters at the theater, or you can print the flyer from the Production Blog.

Remember that $75 for dinner, wine, dessert and a top-quality live performance is actually a good deal!  Not many fund-raisers are events where you don't get badgered to buy something at the event...
So Please invite someone this week to the Gala on November 23rd.

That is all for now!
Love,
Your  EBM

Scoop light needed

Some of our dressing rooms are add-ons and could use more light.  Does anybody have a silver metal scoop-type light which holds a single light bulb we could use?   We need the type that clamps on a board.   It would add a lot of light to our dim dressing room.  Thanks!

Makeup

Hey guys!  I'm sorry this post is coming so late, I tried to post last night but I guess it didn't work. :( Kathleen and I will be there tomorrow at Noon to help out with any makeup questions or concerns. This also includes hair! It will be general theater makeup with a few changes, such as more dirt (you can use a brown eye shadow for that).
We will see you all tomorrow! Rest up!

Tori

Parking Saturday 12/07/13

Please mark your calendar for parking for the show on Saturday 12/07/13 as the parking area in front of the Forni Building will be closed off for a private event using that space that day with over 600 attendees.  Please plan on parking in other areas, i.e. over by the live stock barns, saving the close to the theater parking for our patrons.

THANKS

Box Office Note

Our Baroness of All Things Box Office, Nancy Christeson
will be out of town for our performances Dec 19-22.

Please plan to take care of your ticketing issues before then or after then.
Thank you!

Comp tickets for the cast and crew are forth-coming....

Sun Oct 27th

I am carpooling today with Cindy Nelson.  We need to leave at 5 pm so she can return home for a client appt, and then will be returning at 8 pm for Master of the House.  We are not on stage for The Wedding scene.

Anne Novotny
Hello

I am wondering about October 30th.  I know Adeline already asked about it, but I didn't see an answer any where.
The original schedule says  Act 1 'vocalists' the new one says 'leads only'.

I don't want to miss if I'm supposed to be there.  I'm not a lead, but I am a 'vocalist'.

Thank you, Susan

The power of Les Mis..a quick and true story

This afternoon I was practicing my music in what I thought was a fairly private place.  As I practiced I felt a presence and noticed there was an elderly gentleman sitting on a bench not too far away. I was a little embarrassed and annoyed, but continued.  Suddenly, this man was beside me with tears in his eyes asking how I came to be singing this particular music at this particular moment. I briefly explained about the show I was rehearsing for.  This man then wept and told me how special this music was to him. It was a passion he shared with his wife.  He told me he had just left her bedside for a few minutes of respite and that she was dying, leaving this mortal plane within a day or so. He said he couldn't believe it when he heard his beloved music and that I had given him a gift.  I then held this stranger while he cried.  After a bit he thanked me and went back to sit by his wife's bedside for perhaps the last time in their long life together.
Until today I don't think I truly understood the power of this story we are telling and how we will touch people in ways we have yet to imagine.
Adeline

I'll need a ride to any rehearsals on Nov. 5 through 9.

Dear Fellow "Les Mis" Cast Members,

I'll need a ride to any rehearsals on Nov. 5 through Nov. 9.

I'll be checking to see which rehearsals I'll have to be at during those days, and, once I know, I'll be able to make arrangements with a person/ persons who will be able to take me to and from the rehearsals; I'm prepared to compensate my ride for gas money.

Thanks.
:)

Somthing Fun

The Web is . . . almost complete

I wish we all had the time to read these character biographies, diaries, letters and more...
The village has formed a true "web" amongst each other - a result I hadn't expected - but a result YOU have created as a group conscience.  A web that is strengthening our show.

WITNESS:
"I was very moved by Enjolras' passion in the café and have a motherly affection for him.  I've known him since he was but a small child."
"My father was an alcoholic who began molesting me when I was young.  This is how I learned to please men.  I only want to escape my pain."
"My abortion has caused my sickness, but I must work for income."
"I just want to be loved."
"I hate Fantine because she at least had a child.  My husband is out all night and comes home drunk.  I was not able to bear children.  It is rumored that my husband has."

45 and counting . . .  very moving work you guys have done.  Thank you for taking the plunge and being part of the web that connects us, gives us purpose in our scenes.

You have seven more days to join the group and turn one in.  Seven more!
 Hugs to all!

Cast Party

Given everyone's packed Christmas schedules, how would everyone feel about having the Les Miz cast party the Sunday following Christmas (Dec 29) instead of Dec 22 as currently scheduled? As it is our family is unable to attend the current date because of other holiday events and I've heard it is a challenging time for other cast members as well.

October 30 rehearsal

Is this rehearsal for everyone who has a solo in Act one? Just the main characters? Thanks for clarifying.

Body Robbers and Snatchers

Hello Beggar Fleas.
I have been noticing some confusion regarding the added body snatcher robbers that were added the other night to The Sewer scene.

This is the scene following the removal of the barricade in act 2.
This is not part of the Barricade scenes.
Also, noone will need an additional costume for this.  These are beggars picking over dead rebels in the fog and low light.  Throw on a shawl.
Love you- EBM

Props Oct 15

Hello All!
Many thanks to those that brought in some of the stuff I posted a few days ago. We have almost everything - yea!!
We need material that kids at the barricade can tear and roll into bandages. If you have something we can use please bring it is ASAP.
We still could use another wooden bucket and an old broom.
A small barrel for gun powder is also needed.
Laura, your prop mistress is doing a marvelous job of organizing props and is doing a lot of things at home as well - dying, painting, gluing, etc.  A round of applause!!!!
We will be using props more and more as we go along and get used to the rhythm of the show.
Thank you all for respecting the props and touching only what you are using!

Wednesday October 23 Vocal schedule

Hi all! Great job today with the orchestra. If you raise your right hand and promise to review your lyrics, diction and entrances.....I will give you Wednesday  night off. Deal? Hands up....

See another version of yourself onstage !!

Do you want to see, hear, feel another community theater production of Les Mis?  See what our "sister theater" in Traverse City, Michigan is doing onstage with Les Mis.   They opened this weekend.  We've all seen "professional" DVDs - now check out what another theater similar to IT! has been up to.  It's well worth a 5-minute peek!

Check out these two links below sent to us this weekend by Old Town Playhouse:

(The first one is clips from every number in the show.  Fast forward to the songs you wish to see.  The 2nd one is stills taken during performance.)

Looking for props - can you help??

Hello All!
Laura Bonham and I spent some time today organizing the props we have on shelves and on tables in the green room by the entrance to backstage. Please do not move anything so as not to cause your prop people's heads to explode.
We are still looking for a few things. If you have something on the list below and would like to let us borrow it, please bring it in starting this weekend. Many thanks in advance!!!
Adeline

farm hand tools - rakes, hoes, pitchforks, etc. preferably looking worn/used
carpet bag - this is an old version of the suitcase
old spectacles - the ones in the costume room are too modern and we need a couple of pairs
wooden bucket - we use this in quite a few scenes and would like to have more than one bucket
old broom - also used in more than one scene, needs to not look modern
hurricane lamp - this is an oil lamp of a certain type
fake canary - we need a little fake canary to go into Madam Thenardier's meat grinder

Advertising Poster

We have posters for posting to advertise the show.
Check the Production Blog "Poster" tab to download your own copy!

Please start thinking of employers, grandmas, doctors, dentists, attorneys, etc. that you are going t personally invite to get a ticket to the Gala Premier on November 23rd.  Most of the tickets will certainly be sold by personal invitation!

Wednesday vocal rehearsal

Hi! We will be running Act 2 vocals on Wednesday. We are at the point where consistent attendance is critical. Thanks!

I'm sorry to say I'm unable to be there today. I'd hoped to do it all, but I'm running a slight fever and feel I'd better not take a chance.

Thursday 10/10/13 STAGE MANAGERS DAY!   Be nice to DAN SNOW!

The Overture…

This year, for one day, all over the UK, The Stage Management Association would like the spot light to pan off into the wings and pick up those backstage ninjas, stage managers. The day? 10th October, of course, because we think all stage managers deserve 10/10!
Image
10th October 2013 is Stage Management Day (#StageMgrs13) and we want to tell the world a little bit more about the work stage managers do and rejoice in and celebrate the ingenious and creative ways in which they go about it. Who better to organise this than stage managers themselves? Logistical experts and outstanding communicators, with artistic flair to boot! Just think how often you’ve heard the question “But what is it you actually do?…” Well, now is your chance to answer that question and share the answer with the world, having a bit of fun at the same time…
Remember when Rock of Ages shared this YouTube video of the DSM calling a segment of the show?

We loved it and we know other stage managers and theatre fans loved it, too. Could you get permission to do something similar? Could you film a video diary of some of your department’s work? A day in the life of…? How about a time lapse video of a fit up or a reset, or even of making a prop? We want to focus on stage managers in all types of theatre, whether large scale or fringe. It’s all interesting. Maybe you just want to film something a bit silly? That’s fine, too. Let’s face it, much of stage management centres around having a terrific sense of humour!
Does your show have a Twitter feed? Would they allow a stage management #TwitterTakeover for the day? Or even the week? Sometimes the things which seem ordinary to us are intriguing for people who don’t work in theatre. Share those things. Who are the performers in your company who tweet? Would they do Twitter shout outs for the stage management team? We know they love and respect you… let’s make #StageMgrs13 the day when everyone puts it into words and photos.
What fun events can you think up for that week? If you’re in the West End, there are so many neighbouring teams around that you could challenge one another to… a tug of war in between shows? Or something much more imaginative, and risk assessed to high heaven, than our idea. Get your thinking caps on! Maybe you can do something to raise a little money for charity? The Theatrical Guild and The Actors’ Benevolent Fund are the ones supporting stage managers in times of need. We want drama schools to get involved, too. What could you students do? Could you showcase your work? Or maybe challenge the actors to a mark out? A scene change contest, even? Just make sure they don’t win – we’ve got standards to live up to!
How about a bit of a role reversal? Obviously we don’t want to encourage anarchy, but perhaps this is the one night when it would be nice for the stage management team, or indeed the whole backstage team, to join the cast for the curtain call? We understand some stage managers might actually pass out at the thought of this, so how about stage managers choose the music for warm up? Or your company manager give permission for one of the cast to call the half or read out the running times? Perhaps they can do the shout check with you or a bit of well supervised prop maintenance?
Will you be in rehearsals in that week? Perhaps this is the day that your director will make your tea, and certainly we think that someone else should help out with the washing up that day. For those with matinees , maybe producers can pop down for a brew and a chat with the department they might not see that often. If they bring cake, and we have certainly suggested to them that they do, all the better!
Does your theatre have an education department? We’d love to see them throwing the focus onto stage management that week. This is also the perfect week for the local paper to run a “Behind the Scenes…” feature. How about a post show Q and A with the stage management team one night? This would be really popular with the audience on a busy technical show. If you’re shy, get one of your cast to host it and all you have to do is answer the questions to which you, hopefully, know all the answers!
In February The Stage Management Association held the first ever Stage Management Census and 767 of you responded. If 767 of you got involved with Stage Management Day that would make 10th October 2013 a fantastic celebration of all that we do.
We’ll be using this blog to share the many ideas we’re sure stage managers are going to come up with, so we need you to get planning and to let us know what you get up to.
- Tweet us your photos, your videos, your Vine clips. You can tweet us at @SMAssoc and/or tweet with the hashtag #StageMgrs13. If you’re not on Twitter, then join the Friends of the SMA group on Facebook or just email us instead at: admin@stagemanagementassociation.co.uk
- Upload photos and videos to our new Flickr group http://www.flickr.com/groups/stagemanagementassociation/
- Upload videos to Youtube and let us know that they’re there.
- If you have a blog, why not write something about your job or what stage management means to you?

Come on, people. There are just under 8 weeks to go. We can put on large scale musicals in half that time!

Thursday, October 3, 2013

DOes anyone know if Sunday's dance rehearsal is happening or not?  It says as announced . . . trying to make weekend plans.  THANKS

Set Construction, et. al.

Thanks to all who have helped on set construction!

Saturday Jeff Jackson, Mark Novatny and Peter finished the huge ladder structures that will be on the sides of the proscenium for our street monkeys to climb.

Anne Novatny along with Holly, Grace and Anna Salvestrin applied stain to the tables Peter & Jeff & John Dockter built for the Thenardiers' inn.

We've got the stone columns for the garden gate pretty much finished and primed.
Mark N. and Peter did some work on Fauchelevant's cart.
The huge capstan for moving the turntable is ready.
Peter has been working on the bridge pieces for Javert's suicide. That means that all the major pieces are built except for the turntable floor ramps.

Remaining Construction tasks:
 - another session of moving stuff to the theater from Pollock Pines
 - striking DeathTrap (Sept 29)
 - moving our structures into the theater
 - putting the turntable together and building up the stage floor
 - smoothing out turntable issues
 - lots of finish work
 - lots of painting

Beginning October first, Peter and his soulmate will be at the theater most days.
If you have time to come by, we can put you to good use.
Teenagers to keep off the streets? We've got the answer!
Often, repeat offenders are rewarded with donuts or lunch. You never know.

If you haven't helped on construction, we hope we are correct in assuming that you must be helping Terri with costumes, or Adeline and Laura with props, or Marc Bonham with sound issues!

Volunteers needed:
 - a few trainable folks to work in the booth for the show.
 - someone to get ads for the program
 - someone to type and format the program
 - organizer for the advertising poster blitz - it's a relatively easy weekend task that requires a bunch of driving, smoothies and tacos.

Terrific rehearsal last night at the barricade! Turns out that Eponine dies even when Marius can't be there...Can't believe they don't recognize Javert in that flimsy disguise.

Hi Costume assistants/helpers,

I am planning a costume sewing day for this coming Saturday Sept 7th between 11-6? and possible Sunday Sept 8th between 11-4?  We need to get the aprons worked on/done for the factory workers.  This is easy sewing.  We will need people who can iron, pin, cut and sew for this.  We will need a couple of irons, ironing boards, and small tables (Margarita maker-lol?).  Bring your sewing machine, sewing box, pins, scissors, basic thread (GREY, black, white beige) and any current projects you are working on for the show.

I am not sure if we will be at the Theater or another venue I have in mind. I will let you know by Friday.

Thanks for all of your help!

A Letter From Bernadette

Admirable Additions to the Character Development Department . . .
Bernadette Isabelle Duplesis (AKA Cindy Nelson) and Javert (AKA Dennis Murray) have turned in amazing pieces of work I wish to share.

Bernadette (in addition to her character sketch) has written five letters, in character, and delivered them to me in a wax-sealed envelope on parchment paper.  Details therein explain her need to leave her family and work in a factory.  She also lays out her friendship with two  French friends, one of whom dies in a recent uprising.  Through her letters reflecting numerous historical details we see glimpses of a strong "woman's rights activist" present in, none other than,  1829 who is determined "to fight to the death for what is right."
POWERFUL, UNIQUE and AWESOME exposition of character and dramaturgy.
 Bravo, Bernadette!!!

Javert has written and turned in a terse, elocutionary letter (forced only by the minister of Justice to reveal his background) detailing his birth to a Gypsy mother in the Bastille through his sentencing to jail for thievery and numerous other incidents.   He reveals who and what has shaped his code of ethics and personality.  He reveals, in his articulate missile,  how he has steadily climbed in self respect and rank, through hard-earned promotions, to the rank of Chief Inspector.   He further explains his top priority as that of being able complete the cat and mouse game with the fugitive named Jean Valjean with his final arrest and resulting punishment.
I APPLAUD Javert's ability to reveal his character, his background, his motivation, his objectives, his education and THOUGHTFUL REFLECTIONS in the form of a WELL-WRITTEN powerful letter presented in his unique voice. A creative exposition of ideas!!

I could go on bragging about the 19 others who have turned in thoughtful details, but I won't belabor the point.  I look forward to other writings soon . . . .
Respectfully,  Violette De La Rue

Informal Practice Sessions

Hello cast mates! I just wanted to offer up my time and expertise (ha!) out to any of you who are looking for a bit more practice help. I can't say I'm a qualified vocal coach (because I am not), but I can help if you need help with rhythm and/or timing, if you are having trouble finding your starting note, or if you just need general assistance with a song. I can volunteer my home if you need a place to practice (I have a piano), and since I am a Stay-At-Home-Mama I have a bit of time availability during the day and during my non-rehearsal evenings.

Anyway, I thought I'd throw that out there for anyone needing some super informal practice help. Call/text me: (530) 748-7443 or email me: alilavanway@gmail.com

Thanks!

Please accept my apology for missing Thursday's rehearsal and without notifying you.  My daughter arrived in town and I simply forgot to check my schedule.  I won't let this happen again.

Got goosebumps....

OK, we had a few challenges, but I was very proud of much of your rehearsal performance tonight. I am seeing great improvement, attention and quality of sound in most of the show. We will iron out the rough spots, you can be sure. There were several times when I had goosebumps...and a couple of tears(the good kind). Have a good rest, and see you soon.....

Costa little extra if you want to take all year....

just kidding . . .

My deadlines for turning in "Character Sheets" were confusing -
When?  How?  Deadlines?

So the question  now is:  "When is my character sheet due?"
The answer now is:  "Hand or send it to Chrissie sometime between today and September 30.... the sooner the better."

email:  foothillsinger@coachingstudiosite.com
or hand it to me . . .

P.S.
I will be gone 2 weeks in September for family reunion.
Sept 7th -  Sept 22nd.......

Merci,  Violette De Le Rue
